<p>This contribution focusses on varieties of German which are spoken in extraterritorial communities. Many these groups go back to emigration the Middle Ages or Early Modern Times and have developed a specific koiné is characterized by dialect merger language contact with surrounding languages. Another group so-called "border minorities", communities that emerged after World War I bordering German-speaking countries. The article first provides historical overview various minorities. Then, different sociolinguistic settings respective addressed illustrated examples linguistic background.</p><p> </p>
